Low Temperature
Low or freezing temperatures can cause finish cracking or checking when the instrument is brought back into a warm environment. This is because moisture in the wood can freeze, and when water freezes, it expands. The wood, metal frets and finish coat will all contract and expand at different rates. The sudden shock of simply bringing a frozen instrument into a warm room can also crack it. If an instrument is exposed to freezing, leave it in its case, bring it into a room at normal room temperature and let it acclimate – monitor the temperature using this app.
